Girl with Horns and Boa
Oil on canvas board

I had some kind of creative project going on at all times. I choreographed ballets to Beethovan's the 6th; produced radio shows about my dog; made my own board games; and of course I drew many many pictures.

This gallery holds my first oil paintings. I got a taste of oil paint when I was 14. At first I just painted with my fingers. I loved the stuff. The smell. The texture. The blending. I didn't know how to paint and didn't discover thinner until I was 16. That discovery made painting a lot easier.

I lived in Feeding Hills which is in Western Massachusetts. The culture consisted of pick-up trucks, german shepherds and lots of country music so I didn't know a lot about contemporary art other than album covers and old art books in the library. I did portraits of Bob Seger and Mick Jagger for pocket change. Some friends bought my fingerpaintings because they were so trippy. Success was just around the corner.

Persephone's Journey
Collage on old frame

I don't remember why I did this collage but when I found the old slide for it I thought it was funny because my work became very much like this. I do remember not liking the collage because I thought it was amateurish and not as "sophisticated" as my paintings but in hindsight I see how wrong I was. This features Maya Plisetskaya, a famous Russian dancer, whose photographs of her dying swan performance became an inspiration to tell the story of Persephone's journey into the underworld.
