Study of Rembrandt's Portrait of Hendrickje |
I went to Europe in 1986.
I buzzed my hair down to nothing so I could wash it with soap. This was
going to be my version of art bootcamp. My days consisted of getting up
with the sun and walking through the cities. Once the museums opened I stayed
in the galleries sketching and staring. When the museums closed I went back
to the little run-down hotel I stayed in and slept until sunrise to begin
again.
The greatest lesson I learned from intensely looking and drawing works
of art was the lesson of composition. Art masters were superb visual composers.
When you copy their works you are under their supervision on how to compose
a painting.
